How to find Moscow, Russia Rental Apartments

Finding a private Moscow apartment is an excellent way to live the city. You will have a genuine experience of living in Russia, saving money if you are more than one person and cooking your own food. In this article we will explain how to rent a short or long term apartment in Moscow, where to look for one, how much it should costs and what you should pay attention to.

How much is Moscow’s average rent?

Immobilien prices in Moscow are steep. If you rent an apartment in Moscow for a short term, you will find a price of €100 – €120 per night to rent a relatively decent apartment in the center of Moscow. If you are prepared to compromise the location and the iterior, you can cut the price to €60 – €80 per night. If you are willing to live in a small apartment in the suburbs of Moscow, options for €30 per night can be found. Anything less expensive than that is suspicious.

Long-term prices start for a studio in the suburbs at EUR400 per month and for a studio or 1-bedroom apartment in central Moscow at EUR1000 per month. You pay about €2000 a month for a reasonable location and want a nice 2-bedroom apartment with all amenities included.

Please bear in mind that you normally have to pay a deposit that is equal to one month’s rent and sometimes the first and last month as your first down payment. You will also have to pay a commission of one month’s rent when you go through an agent. Then your best case is to go directly to the owner and make them like you, so you can only be OK with a deposit. At the beginning of each month, however, you still have to pay your rent. Also, landlords prefer to sign contracts not exceeding 11 months (dogovor naima) for legal reasons, otherwise they will be required in a special organization to register them. Don’t worry, you can sign an 11-month contract which is extended and usually works perfectly.

The cost of rooms in common apartments is €300 a month. Be prepared to see lots of strange soviet interiors when renting an apartment, but that might be an advantage if you are looking for something that is genuinely Russian.

What is Moscow’s Best Area to Live?

Kitai Gorod – central, residential, many cool bars and clubs, a real Moscow feeling to it, is the best place to stay. It is located in the center of Kitai Gorod, Chistye Prudy, Taganskaya and Kuznetsky Most metro stations — within this rectangle. The only downside is that there is no park, but it is nice to walk around Chistye Prudy because it’s a pond with a small park, so at least some nature there.

There are also many nice restaurants and bars near the street Tverskaya, and it’s also very central and easy to get to.
If you really need nature in the immediate vicinity, try the Sokolniki area or Izmailovsky Park, both of which are slightly outside the center and just 20 minutes’ drive away by public transport.
